I grew up and still live in San Jose and have been trying to comply with the recycling program all these years. II realize that the rules about what goes where in recycling are complicated. But putting things like paper and empty food cans together in the same bin seems to make it easy for “clean” paper to get soiled with food residue from the cans. So, why am I told to trash pizza boxes, since they are mostly clean but may have a little bit of food residue.

Is it true that most plastic is NOT recyclable? Rather, is most of it not going to be recycled because the process is too expensive?

The compost that results from the San Jose garbage process is considered low grade because it still has small particles of plastics in it?

@Maria. It is not that that the process is too expensive. The challenge is markets for recycled plastic, meaning what companies are willing to buy to manufacture new products with the recycled plastics. In 2018 when China stopped accepting mixed plastics, it closed off the main market for plastics. The good news is that there are good domestic markets for #1 PET bottles, and #2 HDPE containers.
